Free Time for Your Guinea Pigs

I suggest you get a big cage for your guinea pigs. Really big. They need room to run around, but however big your cage is, it's still a cage. You need to take them out EVERYDAY to give them exercise. Find a space where there isn't much for them to chew on because they are very inquisitive creatures. My guinea pigs are big scaredy-cats (no offense Slinky and Twinkie) and they like hiding. So I got old shirts for them to hide in until they decided to be explorers. I gave them a hallway to look around in. They still haven't gone down the whole hallway but they're close.
Big movements and sounds will scare them so if you have to move, move slowly. You have to watch them carefully so they don't go sticking their nose in a electrical outlet or something. Your guinea pigs will be scared of you when you pick them up to take them to let them run around. Don't think they don't like you though, they just are jumpy little creatures and they take time to get used to you. Please comment on how I can make my blogs better.

  1. I think your blog is really good so far. Just keep on telling people all the fun things about guinea pigs, and the little excellent tips you have for how to care for them properly. You know a LOT of people just leave them in a small cage all the time, and feed them and that's it. You and I know that's not the right way to do it, so you are doing a great service by telling people the right way to do it.

  2. Slinky and Twinkie--what cute names!

Old shirts are a great idea because they contain your smell, and the guinea pigs will associate your smell with comfort.

To keep them from sticking their noses in an electrical outlet, use child guards (I get them at the dollar store) and stick them in the unused outlets. This will keep your guinea pigs safe!

  3. Great tips on keeping guinea pigs!

I would suggest breaking up your blog posts with more paragraph breaks, pictures and quotes from experts or other sources, with links to more resources.

    Keep up the great work!

  5. Glad you are advocating taking the piggies out to play everyday. Pets require a lot of attention. Guinea pigs really enjoy being with their humans. They are such playful creatures. Best wishes with them.

  6. We had a guinea pig for many years and she was a constant joy to us. I loved how she would sit in my lap and "purr" when she was happy. One unusual thing we did, is we always took her camping with us. She had a harness and a leash. We also took her to baseball games (Little League) and all the kids always came to visit her. LOL...we did that with our rabbit too. In fact, the guinea pig and the rabbit were best friends. Good luck with your Conies.

  7. If I was a Guinea Pig I don't think I would like to be in a cage all day.

So - you are very nice to go out of your way to give them time outside of their cage.

    Keep it up!

  8. Diane Cass-Did your guinea pig get scared from all the attention? Maybe I'll try to take them camping one day.
